You will probably want more than my subjective opinion, but I would do it for the future compatibility. The changes to make it work with XML will still (in my experience) work with SGML, so they are backwards compatible. I just verified that I could use my XML docbook as the source in the openjade toolchain on RedHat 7.3 where I had originally used SGML source. The reason I went with XML when I first started was because I read somewhere that future development was going to focus more on XML than SGML. One tutorial I looked at about Installing and Using XML/SGML DocBook Editing Suite ( http://supportweb.cs.bham.ac.uk/documentation/tutorials/docsystem/build/tutorials/docbooksys/segmentedhtml/ ) has a small section on SGML vs. XML, but didn't say a whole lot, other than to recommend XML if you are starting new (it does have a short section and screenshot of Vim, the preferred editor of the author, so the author must know what (s)he is talking about :) ). There is on online book about DocBook XSL at http://www.sagehill.net/book-description.html Anyway, just some thoughts. I am by no means an experienced DocBook user.
