I remember experimenting a bit with that KMemaid feature in the past. It has nothing to do with setting up XFree, it's just that when the unicode is written to elements.txt, it's replaced by question marks, as opposed to e.g. a UTF8 encoding, so it cannot be read in again. There was even a bug report on that before https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=814154&group_id=89311&atid=589649 which seem to habe been closed without any fix.
