Some thoughts regarding 'id' v 'note'

Ok, this won't be a problem as it doesn't add any overhead in the core.

1.   Being able to associate an id with each element is necessary for 
merge operations - I have my entries in another format and export these 
into memaid format.  When re-exporting, I don't want to lose the memaid 
statistics so I need to be able to match up entries in the two files.
2.   That said, I agree that this need would be adequately served by the 
proposed note field - as long as there is somewhere that I can attach 
information my merging needs are taken care of.
3.   I'm wondering about the choice of 'note', though.  It has such a 
human-readable connotation, as if it was something the user associated 
with the entry.  How about 'cookie'?  This would seem to capture the way 
the field is intended to be used.
