Just to be devils advocate - you just as easily say that CVS does use a
database to store the file, versions and other things.  The database
format is variable-length records terminated by an LF character (,v
files).  Too many people think that a database has to be a b-tree, it
doesn't of course.  Different database formats have their own pros and
cons, including b-tree's, isam, relational etc..
