This is exactly what I was looking for.. 

You are correct it does not apply cleanly against anything but
1.1.0-beta1

I'm curious though it seems to be a trivial change that could easily be
adopted... and still backward compatible. 

Anyone know it this will ever become part of mainline. Lots of sites I
freequent must be using this due to the layouts I see.
