Yes it is.  Mind you, everything that's in the book is also available on
line, but getting the book makes sense as you do not have to switch
window between the web page and Blender all the time.

You will however find that, despite its 768 pages, the book does not
cover all the features, for the program is so rich; for some features,
you should go with the tutorials, and also forum such as this one.

I was an absolute beginner just 8 months ago, and the best way to learn
was to try things. In 2 months, I was comfortable enough to make the
cover art for my Sci-Fi novel, and I was impressed by how good the
final product looked. And I consider that I am familiar perhaps with at
most 30 to 40% of Blender (I skipped all animation stuff since this was
not what I was after).

It will take you several weeks to get comfortable, and the first week 
you will be lost most of the time.  Just hang in there, it is worth it
