Hi,

What would be the nearer to LighWave surfaces is (I think) material
indices or vertex groups.

Create a new material index (new button below the 1 Mat 1 in the editing
tab F9), select the faces, click assign. This is quite equivalent to
asign a surface in LW
Then in shading tab F5, you can create a new material and asign it to
that index, by selecting the corrsponding number in the [1 Mat 1] area

Vertex groups are more subtil, since you can paint the weight of the
material, assign particle emiter for hair, and so on. But for simple
crisp color material asignement, indices should be sufficient.

Hope that helped
