I speak from experience, As one who started learning Solidworks on a first generation pentium with 32MB ram. If your machine has to identify every point, edge, surface, midpoint, quadrant, tanget, perpendicular etc. as your cursor crosses the screen and report back with a different cursor to tell you what's available it can be staggering for your reesources. I used to wait 5 to 10 seconds after crossing the screen for the trail of cursors to catch up so I could begin tomake a selection. The newer machines are much faster and support bigger RAM, but if you were working on a complex scene like the really organic scenes in Elephants Dream you'd bring your CPU to it's knees with that kind of overhead. Fields of grass, heads of hair, a really detailed animal character thats a lot of feedback.
