I take that back. Apparently, cinepaint thinks there is no point in
saving an 8-bit image in 16-bit format, and I cannot think of an
obvious reason to do so. Since the original image does not contain
enough information to require 16-bit encoding, you are unlikely to add
it manually in cineapaint, so even if it had the option, it would be
wasteful. But if you want to do something tricky with you image (say,
enlarge and interpolate, or add some fine noise), you can convert the
image before loading it to cinepaint:

convert orig.tiff -depth 16 edited.tiff
