That's sad for those of us who don't (won't) use Microsoft.  Perhaps now
is the time to give up boycott - ineffective anyway - swallow pride and
buy the damn stuff!

Seriously, either GIMP or Cinepaint, is probably good enough for all but
the most picky  of amateurs.   GIMP is more user-friendly in many
respects.   Until recently cinepaint (as filmgimp) had no print
facility, but then it, as a film editor, didn't need one.  The unsharp
mask facility with preview under GIMP is more useful; scaling images
doesn't require calculations; canvas resizing; use of text; etc. etc.
All outweighed by the 16-bit facility of Cinepaint.

Unfortunately 16-bit colour-managed GIMP is a long time coming and the
most important aspects seem to present insurmountable obstacles.
Colour management after a fashion is possible, using LCMS command-line
embedding, but it's all a bit rickety.

Cinepaint is a bit like an old banger with a modern engine and
transmission.   You get where you want to more or less, but the ride's
as uncomfortable as hell.    The hope is that GLASGOW, having shed the
GIMP-1.2 chassis and bodywork, will be less mediaeval - but, like all
things open-source, it will take time and, by the time it does hit the
spot, the commercial side will have moved on.

Fortunately I don't earn a living from photography, so, after three
paragraphs of chewing it over, I've decided I couldn't live with myself
as a Microsoft user.   So, on with the hair shirt and kid myself that
what I produce couldn't be any better if I had PS - and it's more
fun!
