Specifying segment of dvd to rip

Hi !

I have a dvd on my harddrive with a total runtime of a couple hours.
In the middle of the movie there's a bump (broken video stream) which breaks playback on any media player I've tried. So then I tried opening the vob files directly on VLC and I saw the bump again, but VLC played straight through to the end (good).

Now I'm trying to rip the dvd to an avi file, xvid 700kbit/s, 2 pass. When the 1st pass gets to the point of the bump, the encoder breaks and thinks the file is over, and it's starts the 2nd pass and I get the avi file perfectly encoded up to the bump part and no more
Without trying to make magic with transcoder or dvd::rip, is there a way to specify I want to rip from frame a to b or runtime h1:mm1:ss1 to h2:mm2:ss2 ? If I could do this, when I would just glue both parts together using something like virtualdub on wine. Unfortunately, the bump does not happen during a chapter switch, so I can't just choose a set of chapters A and B.
