I think some discussion about that is appropriate; if it had been necessary
to compile all of the GIMP sources, I wouldn't have tried to do it with
Visual C++ since it's not too well documented. As far as I looked, the way
it's described at the web site seems to be outdated. The Makefiles for VC
simply aren't there (at least in some of the directories).

In fact, I wouldn't have tried to do it at all because my time is at the
moment very constrained. Perhaps there is a better way to document which
software packages are needed to compile the program and where to get them
(eventually including "tested with version x.xx" to avoid "versionitis").

Okay, that was something I have to learn as "newbie" to OSS development. ;-)

Not yet, as I hoped that he would read this mailing list. Since this seems
not to be the case, I'll do it now.

I think my preliminary solution is worse than the old code in no case and
better in some cases; since I don't know when I get to solve the issues, I'd
think applying it right away is the right thing.
