I thoroughly agree with Oztan, the very first thing is the architecture. A few
months ago i started to develop a new architecture in C++ for openhdot264.
It is in the CVS of the project.
Now i would change a few things from it, but i believe that the basic structure
is correct. The basic idea of it is having modules with very clean interfaces (for
transformation, quantization, intra prediction, SAD...), so the modules can be
reemplaced directly with different implementations (a good example is the
transformation, where C and MMX/AltiVec/... versions exist).
A similar approach should be taken with the C version. So the first
step is to start breaking things in modules and specify the interfaces for them.
Also the key structures must be defined (macroblock, block, picture...). The
existing C++ code in the CVS could be used as a guideline.
