I expect that it was based on experience.  Apple has a history of 
abandoning professional customers, and abandoning their products in 
general.  They seem to be in a race with themselves to 
invalidate/degrade their existing products so that the customers can 
order upgrades or complete replacements.  Within days of introducing a 
new version of OS X, Apple pulls all support files for the previous 
version.
