Your response made me laugh. 

Eventually you get an instinct for this sort of thing. I've been making
films/CG WAY too long. :) From your description it seemed very likely
you were running out of RAM. I figured the rest of the email was just
good education for folks. 

Seeing the rest of your thread, 512MB is way light for any CG work. Heck
my laptop has 768MB, and I don't do any CG on it, it's just a busy
email/web/occasional compile type of system.

For HD/film workstations I put 4GB in them. That's the point of
diminishing return for 32 bit systems. 64 bit systems let you go even
higher as necessary. Of course the resolution of the models and the
renders will drive those numbers.
