I don't think that requiring a distro packaged blender is a good idea.
For one thing, installing blender is a piece of cake.  You just extract
the tar.gz file and you are done.  Never had that fail (OK, once OpenGL
was misconfigured by a bad ATI frglx install, but then the distro
packaged OpenGL applications also failed).

Plus, The last several releases of blender have added some really nice
features, and I don't think that many distributions will be supply 2.41,
let alone 2.42 (and 2.42 has some really nice stuff).  

I use Ubuntu, but I install blender myself rather than installing the
ubuntu packages version.
