The recession hasn't hit me that deep - I can go the extra $1 and use
double layer media and 352x480 resolution :-)

For low bitrate neither mpeg-1 or -2 even begins to compare to mpeg-4

None of the books I've seen are a "here's how to build an encocder" type. They're
definitely about the theory of video and compression.

The bible is anything you can find by Charles Poynton. The one example I have used
	as a reference is:

Title: Digital Video and HDTV - Algorithms and Interfaces
	Author: Charles Poynton
	ISBN: 1-55860-72-7
	available from: http://www.amazon.com/Algorithms-Interfaces-Kaufmann-Computer-Graphics/dp/1558607927/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240594559&sr=1-1

Another good book, someone less heavy on the math ;) is

	Title: Digital Video Compression
	Author: Peter Symes
	ISBN: 0-07-142487-3
	available from: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Video-Compression-CD-ROM-Peter/dp/0071424873/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240594660&sr=1-1

and lastly if you ever wondered exactly what the difference was between PAL in the UK
and PAL in Germany was OR what the bit by bit definition of an MPEG-2 Caption
Service Descriptor or Program Stream Map is then you want:

	Video Demystified
	Author: Keith Jack
	ISBN: 978-0-7506-8395-1
	available from: http://www.amazon.com/Video-Demystified-Handbook-Digital-Engineer/dp/0750683953/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240594967&sr=1-1

There are probably others and maybe someone else will submit their favorite reference
	books.

	Happy Reading!

	Steven Schultz
