Well the XFree86/Xorg support for SIS Xv has always been a litle iffy.

I'd try rebooting, changing resoultion (though since it's a laptop don't think
this applies), checking if the external display is on/off, resizing the video
window, try some other Xv application (xvtest, mplayer...).
