New xine releases / change of announcement policy

Dear subscribers,

(There are new releases: xine-lib 1-alpha2 and xine-ui 0.9.15. See below
 for details.)

when you subscribed to xine-announce, you have been promised very low
traffic on a moderated list, where you will get informed quickly about
every release of "xine", as well as important news about the project.

Since then, things have changed: The project has grown, and there is no
longer just "xine". Instead, we have a lot of modules:

- xine-lib, our core engine
- xine-ui, our skinned front end, supporting xine-lib's newest features
- skins for xine-ui
- gxine (formerly known as "gnome-xine"), a simple GTK front end
- xine-vcdx, a navigation capable VCD plugin

Each of those are released separately by now, so if we would actually
announce all those releases that would make up to 3 announcements per day
in busy times like these weeks. My guess is that those announcements would
be an annoyance for those of you who don't use most of these modules.

Therefore, I propose the following policy changes for this list:
(If you disagree with these changes, feel free to tell me, preferrably via
 the xine-user list. By now, this is just a proposal.)

Future release announcements on xine-annouce will only cover "big
releases" (ie things like 1.0 or releases that fix severe, possibly
security relevant bugs). These announcements would come with a module
status overview like the one below.
Additionally, non-release announcements (like the xine arts contest, which
is announced in separate mail) will be sent via xine-announce.

For those of you who wish to track all the releases of particular modules,
I recommend subscribing to those modules on freshmeat:

Just go to http://freshmeat.net/projects/xine and click on "Subscribe to
new releases". You will need to log in for that with your freshmeat
account. If you don't have one, you can easily register on the same page.
This will allow you to subscribe to almost every free software project on
the planet, btw. And it enables some of freshmeat's advanced features
(like instant messaging and project rating).

Okay, today we have two new releases:

- xine-lib 1-alpha2
  This release adds back the most commonly used audio drivers, so
  everybody should be able to test it. As opposed to the first alpha,
  1-alpha2 has become quite stable, and a few additional API calls have
  been added. The ChangeLog says:

  * configurable image position
  * DVD menu button highlight position fixes
  * internal engine changes to allow a new layer of post effect plugins
  * VCD playback fixed (actually it was a bug in the real demuxer)
  * pnm input plugin (old real network protocol)
  * real demuxer fixes
  * use binary real codecs to decode rv20/30 video, sipro/cook audio
    (experimental)
  * arts audio output plugin ported to new architecture
  * esound audio output plugin ported to new architecture

- xine-ui 0.9.15
  This release adds a bunch of new features, including a nice logo
  animation when playing audio only streams and support for ASX files and
  other playlist formats.
  Of course, loads of bugs have been fixed, as well.
  xine-ui's changelog says:

  * download asx playlist. In fact it can download anything, since we
    use libcurl now. It's experimental and not documented yet (use dload:/
    as an mrl prefix, ftp:// are also handled)
  * handle playlist file/mrl in playlist (cryptic words here)
  * tons of toolkit bugfixes,
  * snapshot fixed,
  * update from time to time audio and spu language,
  * fix root window display,
  * output window can be on top even in windowed mode,
  * scan whole playlist about stream info,
  * playlist support: asx, tox, m3u, pls, sfv and raw text,
  * playlist loop modes,
  * new mediamark object support (start/end/ident/mrl),
  * possibility to add a new mediamark from current position playback,
  * mediamarks are editable from playlist window,
  * visual animation while audio only stream playback,
  * kde window mapping bug fixed,
  * handle 'none' video output plugin,
  * fix playlist entry moving,
  * fix relative seeking bug,
  * fix 'file:/' mrl DnD adding bug,
  * improved support for moving and resizing video window,
  * (aaUI) playlist fixes,
  * man pages and translation files updates.
