Presumably, the front end is working fine for the purpose of watching AVI
files and other such things...

I don't know if CentOS has the relevant bits of xine-lib disabled. It may be
that the MPEG code isn't compiled in, which will stop you from watching DVDs;
it may be that all that you need is libdvdcss0...
