Yahoo announced its earnings for the second quarter of 2005. Comparing
with the equivalent numbers for Q2 2001 shows that the site succeeded in
increasing two key metrics as follows:
* number of pageviews: 28% growth per year
* earnings per pageview: 15% growth per year
Yahoo now makes 0.3 cents per page (equivalent to a CPM of $3).
Excuse me for harping on the usability message, but these numbers show
that it was about twice as important for Yahoo's growth to find out what
users want as it was to increase the monetization ratio. I know from
personal experience that Yahoo has a great user experience team, and I am
sure that they have a good advertising sales team as well. Both teams did
superb work, increasing quarterly revenues from $182M to $875M in only
four years.
