I don't think your clients will be very interested if you try to charge an
hourly rate. They'll want a fixed price for what they want agreed up front.
That's the catch, unvariably they don't /know/ what they want... ;)

I've just started on the freelance route too, have one project (a small
static site) underway and just sent a proposal out for a larger ecommerce
site. I'm hugely underpricing myself at the moment, just so I can build up
a portfolio of freelance work, and get some good recommendations from these
customers.

So I'd say work out how long it's going to take you (realistically), and how
much you're happy to work for (say GBP15/hour), and go from there. You'll
need to make sure you have a fairly tight spec to stop the customer from
taking the pee though, that's where the trouble starts.

FWIW I'll be very interested in reading the replies you get to this post!

Best of luck,

seb

Subject: [wdf-dom] Rates for freelancing

Hi all,

I was looking for some advice please. I have decided to do some freelance
webdesign and already have 4 sites which I have been requested to do for
various people, of different types, sizes and needs.

The thing is I have no experience of knowing how to charge for something
like this. Hourly rate or daily rate? How much approximately would I
charge? If I was charging an hourly rate, for example, how many hours on
average would I charge for...say for example if I was doing a site with 10
pages from scratch. (for arguments sake)

Any help and advice most appreciated!

  Thank you

  EmilyN
