He's release manager and an outspoken (if unofficial) spokesperson for
the project.  I've also yet to see his views refuted by anyone in the
project.  I've certainly seen them supported.

That's why I'm suggesting that approach #1 be to kindly request GNOME
clean their crud (I'm assuming you're talking about Galeon's dev team).
And as an alternative:  looking elsewhere.  Coding from scratch should
be done only when necessary.

MIME file associations cannot be directly modified through Galeon, and
require going through GNOME's mechanisms, which are apparently Nautilus,
and _that_ has numerous side-effects in non-GNOME environments,
discussed above.
