I'm running the latest Galeon 1.3.19 and it grabs the icons for
bookmarsk just fine.

I have yet to need any preference that's not already provided by Galeon
1.3, expect maybe proxy exceptions.  To be fair that's gnome's job, not
Galeon's.

The themes are managed by gnome, as they should be.  As for the
throbber, I personally have never had any reason to change it.  All the
other options you mention are also controlled by gnome, as it should be,
since galeon is a gnome application.  You can control this in gnome's
preferences.

If you want a gtk-only browser, I suggest you take a look at skipstone.

All the things that I like about galeon are here.  With a few tweaks,
though, firefox is everything galeon is.  I run galeon mainly because I
like how the tabs work better than firefox and that galeon is noticeably
faster than firefox.

You knew at the outset that galeon is a gnome application.  Therefore it
does have dependencies on gnome libraries and gnome daemons.  Gnome is
currently at 2.10.  Therefore to run galeon you need at least all the
gnome 2.4 dependencies up and running.  Galeon is only meant to
standalone within the context of gnome.

I also recommend you stick to binary packages.  This way the
dependencies are already sorted out for you.  There is no reason for
make install to take care of bonobo. Bonobo is a completely separate
library.  You have to first make sure it is built and installed
correctly and then install galeon.  You also have to make sure that the
galeon bonobo component definitions are placed in the correct path where
bonobo can find them.  (Hint:  If bonobo was built using /usr as its
prefix, then you should build galeon with a /usr prefix also; installing
galeon to /usr/local won't work unless you copy or symlinks some files
back into /usr)

Lost me on that one.  They are coming for whom?  You, firefox, galeon,
or IE?

Do you mean in real-time?  Every time you open the bookmarks list it has
to go fetch a load of icons?  No thanks.  If you mean each bookmark has
a static icon associated with it that was downloaded at the time the
bookmark was created, then I am already seeing that.

That's because your gnome settings have evolution as the default mail
handler.  Change it in your gnome preferences.  The fasted way to do
this (and regardless of distro) is to run gconf-editor and change the
keys in /desktop/gnome/url-handlers for mailto.  You can change your
default browser by setting the /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http and
https keys.

Again.  You need to set the default handlers in gnome's preferences.
galeon's help manual is displayed in yelp, a gnome app.  It's not
directly related to Galeon.  You'll have to excuse my frustrations with
this post, but you seem to misunderstand how gnome works and what
components make up the gnome desktop.  Granted this discussion may
indicate some serious deficiencies in Gnome itself and ease of use
issues.

There is plenty of documentation on the hows and whys both on the web
site and in the archives for this list.  Every possible issue you can
imagine with regards to 1.2.x vs 1.3.x has been thoroughly hashed and
rehashed on this list.  Please search the archives and you can find more
reasons for and against this simplification than you ever wanted to
know.

You can't do it.  Mozilla has officially dropped support for GTK1 and
gnome 1.x is obsolete.

Well, of course.  Firefox has taken on the gnome look and feel when
running on linux.  Galeon is a native gnome app based on gtk.  Therefore
yes, they will look very similar.  Firefox has adopted the gtk look and
feel for tabs (mostly), so the tabs will look similar to galeon.

Just a hint here.  If you really want to get some professional responses
to your complaints, please write less informally.  Otherwise you will
only be disappointed and walk away thinking the Galeon developers are
elitist snobs when in fact you simply need to approach them a better
way.
