Thanks. An obvious point, but not so obvious to someone like myself
who normally does not worry much about multimedia.

Bingo. When I double click a link to an .mpeg file, the dialog that
now pops up has a "helper applications" list that includes gxine, and
this works. I think I'm beginning to understand the the logic here.
