My "Bingo" a little premature. I tried editing the line in
gxine.desktop: 

  MimeType=video/mpeg;video/wmv

in order to add that MIME type, and this resulted in a mimeinfo.cache
file with these lines:

  [MIME Cache]
  video/mpeg=gxine.desktop
  video/wmv=gxine.desktop

Yet the "helper applications" option does not appear in the galeon
dialog when a .wmv file is double clicked.

I suspect that ".wmv" is only a Microsoft extension and is not the
name of the MIME file type. If so, where does one find that kind of
information?
