Yes, in View-->Encodeing, it is set to UTF-8.

However, I'm unclear conferning font selection. Under
Edit-->Prefrences-->Fonts, the encoding is set to unicode, which I
assume is the character set. Are you refering to the "monospace" drop
down list of fonts? The default font selected is "mononospace" which
refers to a font set that apparently lacks a wide range of
characters. 

Are the fonts listed in that drop down menu built into galeon, or do
they reference system fonts? I tried other fonts and they had no
effect. I'm working with a new installation and have not yet brought
in any font sets, and I wonder if that's the problem.
