"Workaround"? Your second line ("shortcut icon") is the *only* accepted
way of adding a shortcut icon to a website.
The "workaround" for improperly coded websites would be to do a
non-standard thing (request a file to which no link on the entire
Internet points). Some browsers do this, it's *wrong*.
This doesn't answer your question, but I just felt like ranting :).
