I just did,  but all the (bad) behaviour is the same.

I looked in the changelog (I'm not 100% sure but I think that it was
the latest update that broke acroread galeon plugin - it worked in
fresh etch install, then broke after next update):

  acroread (7.0.9-0.2sarge1) stable; urgency=low
    * Added patch from Jean-Christophe Dubacq to add support for latest
      libgtk2 library name.

To give full information - I'm using this debian repository:

yes.

yes, it works in debian Iceweasel. In fact currently I'm using galeon
for everything except for opening URLs to .pdf files. Fortunately
galeon crashes gracefully when I click on .pdf by mistake, and
remembers everything needed to restore the session ;-)

And I open .pdf URLs in Iceweasel. (Iceweasel is debian's Firefox - ice/fire, fox/weasel ;).

To be honest I'm not good at understanding ldd's output. As I read
this - I don't see any error here, but maybe you do?
