Ya, I think the image name and the caption should both be able to show…
my opinion is that if I want the image name to show it could replace the
image number.  The reason I like to show the image name is so that when
someone asks about a specific image I can refer to it easily… same as
having the image number up there only more ‘robust’.  So if I check show
image name, I have not use for the image number.
 
The cascading sounds great!  I would suggest you make it a separate
check box though… so it is optional… then the user can decide if the
want to cascade down or not, which is an advantage and also prevents
them from accidentally overwriting stuff.
 
By making the cascading a default, you lose the ability to make settings
specific to a parent folder.  This will become a bigger nuisance once
you are able to have pictures and subfolders in a parent folder fully
functional. I.E. you can have folders and pics in a folder and the pics
are still ‘viewable’.  May I ask what your eta is on that?  I understand
your ‘disclaimer’… these are pretty soft estimates.

Yep, that's how "display file names" works. The filename is displayed
if there is no caption. No one has complained so far, so I figured
that this implementation is reasonable. Do you think it should work

Yes, you pretty much summed up my current thinking about "cascading
album attributes". There will be an "attributes" editor on all pixory
"nodes" (folders/directories), not just on albums as it is now. When
you set attributes on that node, the same attributes will be set on
all children nodes, including albums, overwriting all existing
settings. You can then go into any child node and change the settings
on the child without affecting the parent. So, in other words,
attribute settings always cascade down. Also, every time you create a
new child node, including albums, it "inherits" the attribute settings
from its parent node. 

The only shortcoming I see to this scheme is that its pretty easy to
accidentally overwrite a whole bunch of carefully chosen individual
album settings by absent mindedly changing the settings for a distant
parent node.
