Thanks Joe,
What Joel stated about still cameras producing short clips is exactly my
situation and motivation. However, as Joe correctly stated, my real life
situation leaves me in the short term future little room to actually
implement anything.
Now, here is a progression of scenarios I envision as a possible roadmap
regarding the movie issues.
1.) User X has short movie clips (< 10mb) he want to share with
Friends&Family. He moves or downloads the files into a directory which is
served out by pixory. The file type of these clips shall be *.avi and/or
*.mpg. Pixory recognizes the file type and treats it as digital asset, which
means:
- You can assign a caption/narrative text to the movie
- it can be part of an album
- its being displayed with a static movie-icon placeholder in the
lightbox and the album.
- its being vended out/downloaded by clicking on the placeholder image
within the album view. This implies that instead of getting a full screen
window of a picture you will get the typical download panel (open//save as
choice) for downloading files.
- *.avi and *.mpg assets can be uploaded/downloaded via 'ftp' feature
- metainfo field and info page is empty.
2.) same as above BUT
- metainfo (size/format/framerate etc) is being extracted from movie
clip for *.mpg's
- first image of stream is being used as instead of the generic image
placeholder icon
3.) same as 2.) BUT for *.avi files
- image extraction poses problem because decoder might not be available
on server machine
4.) same as 3.) BUT
- movies are being vended out from album by streaming them
I am not quite sure about scenario 2. and upward and frankly I consider them
as a nice to have.
What does this community think about this approach?
Cheers
Reimer
PS: I purposefully restrained myself from features like:
- Stream to image conversion
- auto scene detection and playback/streaming
and other pretty advanced features I think are out of reach for now.

Yep, this is a good request. In fact, Reimer Mellin (one of the
contributors) has been asking for this feature for so long that he
finally volunteered to help with the implementation. He's pretty busy
with the rest of life right now, but at least he's looked into it and
started to think about how me might adapt pixory to accomodate other
media types.
regards,
joe
