Thumbnails+pics in 3.9 beta dont work

I just upgraded from 3.8 to 3.9.
After the upgrade some thumbnails do not display (except as the
typical Windows "x" file not found).
Not all thumbs, but some.
Clear cache does not help.
Catalog thumbs don't work.
1st click doesn't work.
Real image works for some pics.
Strange indeed...
WinXP Pro.
