Email notification should always work...  I think the only cases where 
it doesn't work is when it kicks up an error.  So that sounds fishy.

I hid all my comment-spam killing plugins and any other plugins that I 
deemed "too much information".  But it's up to you as to what you want 
to hide.  I don't have any data suggesting that not hiding is a bad idea.
