Fair enough.

I wasn't particularly trying to be pissy about it [that's just my natural
charm flowing through !], and had a [hopefully] constructive off-line
conversation with John Gibbard about this.

It's just that Mozilla is my browser of choice, and the site is completely
broken in Mozilla [this isn't meant to be a further critisicm] - but works
fine in IE, Opera and Lynx.

The real question, which I guess I should have not made so cynically [and
maybe been more explicit about it !], is whether it is actually worth
designing for minority browsers - if it works in them, that's a bonus, but
if not, don't sweat it.

As I'm a [deliberate] part of the minority in this case, maybe I should face
up to the consequences of my choice - although I do think that Gecko's share
of the market is set to increase, so maybe it will become an important
issue.

Is it a fact that going cross-browser / cross-platform necessarily results
in a disproportiate cost increase ? What factors affects the ratio of
compatibility:cost ?

This type of thing is exactly why the 'usability' profession is
misinterpreted by people outside of the discipline. It is also why I become
discouraged to speak up and get involved in the sharing of ideas and
methods.

Items discussed recently on this list are not discussed with the greater
good in mind. It is not about sharing knowledge and learning from each
other, instead it is about public criticism and one-upmanship. As John says,
he was just trying to help someone out.

It saddens me to see this time and again with 'usability' people, who seem
to be more interested in engaging in narrow minded criticism than in genuine
constructive critique - there is a large difference. As a usability person
myself I find it hard to maintain my enthusiasm for the profession when this
keeps happening.

Perhaps I should keep this to myself in future. Or, perhaps not. But I do
appeal that you think twice about your motives for this type of criticism in
the future
