It's a known unknown...I don't think I've heard of anyone doing this 
successfully.

without the  zcml and/or macro setup code, it's hard to says what's 
exactly what's not working, but I'm not surprised it doesn't considering 
the way widget rendering is set up in AT.

AT's widget machinery needs an update in light of new tech.

Possibly as a new set of widget factories that create template bound 
multiadapters rather than the current persistent classes (basically 
registration functions rather than class initializers).
