Customized site.

Hi all!

I'm developing a completely customized site, when I say completely I 
want to say that its look hasn't anything from the look by default of Plone.
After reading a lot of information I decided to change the "main 
templete" despite almost people advice against this customization.
One time my main templete created, I changed the .css file.

Could anyone tell me if that that I'm doing is so terrible or dangerous 
and why?

And, if changing the main templete is "prohibited", how could I create a 
    site web with my own design?
