Customising main_template is perfectly fine so long as you do it to create  
a new look-and-feel for your site, and you do so in a skin product which  
installs itself to provide a new skin (only). It's customising  
main_template for no reason other than to hack in an extra CSS file or add  
a line of TAL to the default Plone skin we frown on, since there are  
(usually) better ways, and this will mean incompatbility with new versions  
of Plone and possibly other products as well.
