I suspect the main reason is that it means we may need to replace the "all or nothing" TinyMCE editor with some thing more modular, like Deco, and nearly 10 years after deco was first envisaged we still haven't managed to build it.... Note that I agree with you instinctively: special markup is a kind of geeky thing that isn't quite in Plone's spirit.
