you have done a hell of a work and I really appreciate that. I 
understand the frustration of some people but it is more frustrating for 
anybody to come looking for information and land on a page completely 
outdated with information that does not work anyway.

just try to make 301 redirects to the pages that make sense applying the 
Pareto principle (80% of the errors will came from 20% of the links); 
all other content must be redirected, IMO, to a page explaining what 
happened to the older docs and allowing the user to make a search again; 
that could be the 404 page.

remember: no pain, no gain.
