altough, we at the FWT decided to not do a 4.4 release, because of many
big changes target for it (plone.app.event and plone.app.contenttypes
were scheduled for it), i'm open to discuss this again. the changeset
has become even bigger and it might help to do a 4.4 release before. i'd
prefer a big bang 5, but we're not there yet.

i agree. but then, a 4.4 would not make too much sense, would it?

the plone.app.event dependency on plone.app.portlets 2.5.1 is new.
before it was 2.5a1, where event and calendar portlets were removed.
that was not the best idea. then 2.5.0 happened, which had z3c.form
based portlets and the dl/dd/dt removal plip included, both targeted for
plone 5, but for plone5 we have plone.app.portlets 3.0. so, finally
saily was fixing plone.app.portlets, reverted the z3c.form and dl plips
and we re-included the event and calendar portlets and made everything
compatible with plone.app.event.
that's good.
plone.app.portlets 2.5.1 should go into the next release of plone 4.3.

we're getting closer to fix that inter-dependency hell.

if you depend on 2.5.1, you should not have any problems. have a look
at:
https://github.com/plone/plone.app.event/blob/1.2.x/versions.cfg
or
https://github.com/plone/plone.app.event/blob/1.1.x/versions.cfg

good idea!

we could start with pinning versions the ecosystem section of
https://github.com/plone/buildout.coredev/blob/4.3/versions.cfg#L220

that was not possible until now, because of plone.app.portlets 2.5a1,
where event and calendar p... were removed.
