I did at one point in the long ago past, seriously consider think about 
shipping Apache with Plone to perform the same function (although not 
using ESI) so it something I've thought about. However this is clearly 
not going happen soon :)

Its adding a lot of complication at all levels (user, developer, 
maintainer etc) and without the proper use case I dont see it's worth 
the effort.

Plone needs a lot of work to be optimized out of the box.
