Under KDM, it's possible to create the ~.xsession file, and then chose "default" instead of "fluxbox" at the KDM login prompt. Maybe is something like that possible also under GDM... If you wish to disable GDM at boot, and boot into console mode, you have to remove GDM from runlevel 2: either you edit /etc/init.d/gdm by adding exit 0 as first line, or you rename /etc/rc2.d and rename Sgdmxx to Kgdmxx.
