I do not really need automount but for repetitive tasks I prefer to use autofs, that's the linux kernel automount facilities, combined with some simple udev rules. This way I have: /media/cdrom /media/ebook /media/pendrive etc. I simply can cd to the directory and the kernel will automount the device if it's present. There are other options however.
