Thank you for the replies, gentlemen.  I am also running Gentoo, with
icewm out of portage (1.3.7-r1). I don't know if it's been built with
imlib, because there is no USE flag for that, but I have imlib and
imlib2 installed on the system. Also forgot to mention that I'm doing
dual-display and have USE="xinerama" (nice to be able to say this to
someone who understands it :=) Xorg-server is at 1.15.0 (latest stable).

I am starting X with "startx", and exec'ing icewm-session in my
.xinitrc.

Aha! Finally I understand what is meant by pseudotransparency! This is
what I want! Of course I don't want to see other windows underneath....
does anyone, really? This is after all just eye candy... and seeing
other windows would be far too disruptive to the eye. So.... this means
I don't need xcompmgr and transset-df?? Just use application settings to
achieve the transparency?

If it's a matter of the application, I guess I have to reconsider the
old Konsole (KDE3.5 version) that I use and love. I guess I should try
the newest Konsole (last one I tried was probably @ v4.3 or so, and I
didn't like it, but it's probably better by now).
