I believe that the problems you describe are related to Windows, which I rarely use and even then, it is only installed on one laptop machine. Microsoft (a criminal organization) has ceased to support older applications like Ecco and although one recent Linux kernel (v. 3.14) inadvertently generated a glitch that prevents 8 bit programs from operating, developers (including Linus Thorwald) are aware of the problem and have committed to providing continuous support for older windows applications under Wine. My .eco file is 21 megabytes and the low memory condition you describe doesn't occur on my systems. (My ecco installation files are kept in a separate ntfs apps partition and the .eco data files are stored on another separate ntfs partition, so the same file is used and updated regardless of the operating system I use). The operating systems I use Ecco on are based on either Debian (Sparkylinux and SolydKX) or Arch (Manjaro) as well as openSUSE and all provide sold support with no cost for the either the OS or the support and are rolling editions that (unlike Ubuntu and it's derivatives) never have to be reinstalled. (Even my openSUSE installation was upgraded without reinstalled when the last version -13.1- came out). Other (i.e. Fedora/Red Hat based) work well with Ecco also.
