Ecco does not have a graphics engine! You can create your own
8-bit channel, 16-bit channel or 32-bit channel gif or png
program/desktop icons or favicons as used on browser bars, there
are several free available programs out there. ( http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-icon-editor-and-replacer.htm ).
The 8-bit channel, 256 indexed color system is "one" spec for the
GIF graphic format and generally accepted by any graphics
card/engine and is independent of the 32-bit EccoPro coding.

This time I fact-checked to support my conclusions....

The graphics engine in Ecco is 8 bit, not 16 bit. I say
this b/c early B&W (non-text based) computers were 8
bit grey scale. Next came 8-bit color w/ Windows 3 being
an early adopter. You got 256 colors and the system was
indexed, meaning fixed numerical values were assigned to
specific colors via a lookup table. The 8-bit, 256
indexed color system is the spec for the GIF graphic
format.

The 8 bit graphics in Ecco work just fine on modern
Windows systems and probably always will. When altering
Ecco icons recently - as EE let's one do - one has to be
sure to save the Ecco icon file as "indexed" (ie, 8 bit
256 or less indexed colors) or Ecco defaults back to it's
original icon files which are stored internally in it's
exe.

NOTE: The above correction is a good argument for an
organized group effort to collect all Ecco information,
toss the bad stuff and keep the good, and do it in such a
way that incorrect information isn't picked up and
perpetuated.
