The new Kindle Paperwhite (7.5 ounces) and Nook Simple Touch GlowLight (7 ounces) use exactly as much power as the regular Kindle and Simple Touch when the light is off. My experience with the GlowLight is that when you have it on its lowest setting, as you might have it in a tent at night during these long winter nights, you will use approximately 10% of the battery to read for approximately six hours at 2 hours per night (which is a 350 page book for me, but may be less for you). Note that the Kindle Fire is a LCD color display, not an e-Ink black and white display, and is thus an entirely different technology from the Paperwhite and GlowLight (both of which are e-Ink eReaders with an embedded LED light tube at the top of the screen to provide lighting directly to the display).
