This would be more of a site to purchase gear, but Steve Green also has many, many videos briefly explaining different types of gear and its advantages. His prices and professionalism are competitive with the big box folks and he is always quick to respond to any questions and or concerns.

It is a personal opinion, but I would do all that I could and can to help the "little guy."  Some of them may not be able to offer the same kind of returns as REI or WALMART, but can anyone truthfully say that Walmart cares about you as an individual consumer.  

Having recently spent the weekend at the Gathering of the Gear Geeks and personally interacted with several cottage gear manufactures, including Grant from Gossamer Gear, Ron from SMD, David from Gold GEAR, I would say their concern and appreciation goes way beyond the call of duty.

Gear doesn't have to be the absolute best of the best, or super expensive, but truthfully, and I think this is true for any product, you get what you pay for.  I would rather spend 100-200 on a american owned and made backpack than something from Walmart and that is true for almost every piece of gear.

Good luck and enjoy the process, between Clellands, Jardine and Skurka's books you can learn more than you would ever want to about backpacking and lightening up.
