I think it could be a great tool for helping to categorize the various adjectives, although I still think it's too broad. Do I really get much more feedback if I can determine that I'm feeling "Disquiet" rather than "Sad"? Maybe some do -- and certainly the goal is quality feedback, so whatever works to get that feedback. For myself, it'd be too distracting. One reason I like the 8. "Sad" may not flesh things out with much detail, but to start with, distinguishing "Sad" from "Lonely" or "Hurt" helps give me better direction. > I like that the CNVC list has lots of pleasant emotions. By far the most common response I've heard from someone when looking at the 8 is, "Why is there only one good one?" :) I think there's only one good one for the same reason there are no "Everything's Fine" lights on your car dashboard, but several red lights for various problems. The 7 'bad' feelings describe different sorts of problems. If there are no current problems, then only one basic emotion is needed, "Glad". It's certainly not very poetic :) ... but I think the point of the list is not to glory in the fullness and variety of life -- just help get some better feedback in light of a problem. > > Whenever any interaction with my beliefs occurs, one or more of > > the basic eight are triggered. > > If we turn that around, it says that when I'm feeling one of > those basic emotions, or perhaps any emotion, something is > probably interacting with my beliefs. So my emotions are > doorways to my beliefs. Hmmm. I think so, yes. And as I said elsewhere, I've found them to be remarkably precise indicators of my beliefs. Nerves to the soul, performing the same function my physical nervous system does for my body. Autonomous, uneditable (though not un-ignorable) feedback.
