Hi all,

Since this is my first post, I'll start at the beginning -- then riff
on Chris's comments:

1. How did you come to be here?

I've heard Dale's name through a variety of common acquaintenances
through the Weinberg/Satir community. I finally ran across him in
another group about XP -- Industrial XP, started by Joshua Kerievsky
who invited me to participate since he's applying our practice of
project community to his practice of XP. Anyway, I met Dale there,
grew to admire his wisdom, followed this to his blog, to his site, and
to this group. That's the short story.

2. How do you feel about being here?

This cuts to some of my comments below -- (I haven't checked these
emotions against the list on the NVC site). I feel excited to find
another group of really interesting people among which are some
friends I haven't found a reason to have nearly enough interactions
with lately (about which I'm a little embarrassed). I feel a little
resistance and fear since I'm starting in the middle, worried about
how much time I'll wind up 'wasting' in these conversations, and
wondering how much I really have to add to this august group. And I
feel hopeful that I'll add something to the conversation.

3. What would you like to have happen here?

Let's see, I think I might have already answered that in #2 above --
reconnecting with some friends, learning some new stuff, gaining some
new perspectives on what I think I already know/believe, challenging
my certainty, and find out what I know (I'm an ENTP and know that if I
don't write or say what I think, I won't find out what I think).

And one more question: What else would you like us to know about
you?

As I said, I'm an ENTP -- just barely. More like an eNTP. I'm living
in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest in Walla Walla, WA -- which has some
of the most amazing red wines in the world (really!). I'm not a
software or engineering person. I appreciate Jerry Weinberg's
perspectives (and Dani's) but I haven't read most of what he's written
-- cause most of what I've read there I've encountered using different
words by other authors. And, as an E, I learn more through
conversation, participation, and observation of the world than through
reading books. I have a background in economics that leaves me
sometimes terribly afraid of the current economic downturn -- we're in
the midst of the same sort of 70 year downturn that we last saw during
what was then terms "The Great Depression". I'm mostly a really
upbeat person. And I learn by exploring what isn't before I settle on
my notion of 'what is'. Some people consider this to be an expression
of 'resistance' -- and it is only a longer and different fact finding
expedition than many.

Oh yes, I'm in the middle of reading almost all of the books I've
started -- and have a huge library of 'yet to reads' that jump off of
the bookshelf when it is time to start, continue, or finish them.

This list seemed remarkably familiar -- I'm in the midst of reading a
book called "Power vs Force, The Hidden Determinants of Human
Behavior" by David R. Hawkins. The book reports on a long term study
of what he calls the 'energy fields of consciousness' that also
correlate to emotional states. He lists 17 'levels' including as many
positive (restoring) ones as negatives (draining) ones. The lowest
levels correlate to physical and emotional sicknesses.

Enlightenment/Eneffable
Peace/Bliss
Joy/Serenity
Love/Reverence
Reason/Understanding
Acceptance/Forggiveness
Willingness/Optmism
Neutrality/Trust
Courage/Affirmation (BTW, this correlates at a neutral level of energy
-- those which follow are draining, those above are restorative)
Pride/Scorn
Anger/Hate
Desire/Craving
Fear/Anxiety
Grief/Regret
Apathy/Despair
Guilt/Blame
Shame/Humiliation

I like the balance of the restorative emotions. Since shining the
light of attention on these can often make the draining emotions moot.
It is very useful to notice when I am in the grip of a draining
emotion to help me identify what is going on -- and when I auger into
that draining emotion, it drains me further. When I balance that
draining energy/emotion with a restorative emotion, it helps me find a
way to access the courage I need to move out of my own pit.
